How to remove the chain from your motorcycle?

When a motorcycle is in motion, the chain stretches after a while. If we don't tighten this chain, it will come out of the motorcycle sprocket, which will lead to an accident. If the length of the 12 links of your motorcycle chain is more than 25 cm, this indicates that your chain is worn. You need to replace your old chain with a new one. In this article, we are going to show you how can you remove the chain from your motorcycle.

Method 1: Remove the chain from your motorcycle with special tools

To remove the chain from your motorcycle using the special tools, here are the steps you need to follow:

Find the main link: To remove the motorcycle chain, we need to find the main chain link. It is a little different from the other links. If you can't find it, clean your channel first. I show you the image of the main link below.

Use the pliers to remove the link: The main link is removed by inserting a link clamp between the two ends of a main link and pushing the clamp so that the axis of the link to which it points comes out of the plate.

Remove the chain from your motorcycle: The chain is made up of 4 parts: -

  • Axe
  • inner plate
  • outer plate
  • Roller

Take a chain breaker tool, it is used to open the chain link. The chain breaker will push the chain link pin and disengage both links. So you can remove some links that you need to shorten. You can also install these pins using the chain breaker tool by inserting the pin between the plates.

Method 2: Remove the chain from your motorcycle without a chain breaker tool

If you don't have a chain breaker tool, don't worry. You only need the three pieces below to remove the chain link.

  • Nut
  • goupille
  • Hammer

Place the chain link over the nut. The axis of the chain must coincide with the hole in the nut. Place the sharp-edged pin on the chain axle, then apply hammer force to the sharp-edged pin and the chain axle will come out of the chain plate.

Disassembly of the main link without special tools

Follow these simple steps to remove the most common master link pattern:

  • Put your motorcycle in position. Turn your motorcycle over, so that it is supported by the saddle and handlebars, with the drivetrain facing you.
  • Place the chain on the lowest speed. You want to have slack to work.
  • Clean your chain ! If your chain is covered in mud, dirt and grime, it will be more difficult to locate the main link and remove it.
  • Find the main link. Turn the pedal to spin the chain until you see one link that looks different from the others. The main links are often a different color from the rest of the chain, to facilitate this process. I will come back to this in detail in the next section.
  • Push the main link pins inward, toward each other. There are few ways to do this without a specialized tool:
  • Use a pair of pliers. Place the jaws of the pliers around the two main link pins and tighten them so that they are pulled towards the center.
  • Use a rope or wire. You can take a strong cord and slip one end of it through the chain on each side of the main link. Cross the ends and pull them so that they tighten around the link, and pull the pins inward. You may need to pull hard, but this method works.
