When to change scooter?

A scooter is no longer just a vehicle that we will buy to be able to move around while waiting to be able to pass the car license via the BSR, it has become much more than that.

In the city for example, many people have given in to this means of transport which still has a lot of advantages, we must not hide it. Among these, we find in particular the price which remains lower than a motorcycle and the possibility of taking an electric model.

We can also argue that it is a quick and easy way to sneak around and thus avoid the endless traffic jams which are generally a given that we must necessarily count when we move in the city.

But today, the scooter has also become a means of being able to move and take walks, in particular thanks to a new range of displacements. In short, whether it is voluntary or not, you are bound to ask yourself a question.

This question is knowing when to change scooter and that is precisely the subject of this article. Whether it is out of desire or following a breakdown like a squeezing scooter, we will see the different scenarios!

Change scooter to increase in displacement

It has been said today that changing a scooter no longer necessarily means that you have a machine that is reaching the end of its life and that you want to have a new one, but you can very well indulge yourself by increasing the displacement.

In this case, we will generally see a scenario emerge. It is that of the adult who is no longer only the holder of the BSR, but also of the car license for at least 2 years.

In addition, you will have to follow a 7-hour training course which came into effect a few years ago. But once this training is completed, you will be able to get scooters with a maximum displacement of 125cc.

It should be noted that if you ever want to be tempted by the 125cc three-wheeled scooters which have gained in popularity in recent years, you will also need a B license that you complete with training.

To be complete, the training to change scooters in order to increase in displacement will require a total of 7 hours of your time and in terms of price, this will obviously depend on your motorcycle school, but know that it will turn around 250 to 300 €.

Finally, be aware that there are some special cases where you will be exempt from this training. For this, you will need to have your B license since at least 1980 or have already driven a 125cc scooter between 2006 and 2010.

Change scooter to avoid excessive costs

Well, we have just mentioned the first big subject here, namely to change scooter for the pleasure of having a more powerful machine. But that's obviously not the only thing that can motivate you.

Moreover, here we will advise you to keep fairly recent scooters and to see how the costs on them evolve. Indeed, the more the parts will age, the more they will tend to fail.

In terms of purchase price, an aging scooter will be much cheaper immediately, but over time, you will gradually make up for this difference in view of the costs you will have to incur.

Therefore, unless you are a good mechanic with the means to have parts at a reasonable price, you are encouraged to change your scooter when you see that it starts to cost you too much for maintenance.

Tightening will force you to change

For this third scenario, you will not have a choice, you will have to change your scooter. Indeed, after a tightening, it is quite simply the engine of your machine which will have died.

If we told you before that you have to sell before having big expenses, we prefer not to tell you how much it will cost you to change the engine of your scooter. In short, avoid squeezing the engine at all costs.

To do this, we give you some advice such as respecting the oil changes and putting quality engine oil. Warm up your machine well before setting off and finally, remember to check the carburetor and change it as needed.

A scooter that is starting to lose power

The last scenario we are going to talk about in this article and which could justify changing the scooter is if your machine starts to lose power, which is not necessarily a good sign.

In this case, change the candle, unless you have already done so. Then check the carburetor settings, but if nothing changes, then your engine is surely struggling.

The wear of the engine is necessarily something normal with the kilometers, but what we can tell you is that it does not improve. So, have your scooter appraised for a quote.

Then see if it is worth it to make the repairs requested or if ever changing scooters would not be the option that seems to be the most viable.

In summary, you can change your scooter if:

  • You want to avoid fees
  • You want something new
  • You want to increase in displacement
  • You just tighten the engine
  • You notice a slowdown
