How to straighten a motorcycle rim

How to straighten a motorcycle rim?

The rim is the cornerstone of the wheel, its central element. Usually made of metal or composite materials (rarely), it supports the tire. What makes it one of the most important parts of any motorcycle are its wheels. Without it, the machine will not roll properly. So, it is important, for the good functioning of your machine, to pay attention often and to straighten the rims regularly. But, then how do you go about it? Answers in the following lines ...

The different types of motorcycle rims

Should it be recalled, the choice of the rims of the motorcycle is something that should not be taken lightly. Whether you are a novice or a motorcycle expert, it is essential not only to favor the aesthetic dimension of the rim.
The rims are produced in different materials: plastic, aluminum, steel or even composite fiber (such as carbon). It is often difficult to choose which one to ride on your motorcycle. What should be remembered is that the peculiarity of the materials used for their manufacture lies in their characteristics. Indeed, these materials which compose it are light while being rigid, so as to reduce the centrifugal force while the vehicle is in motion. As for the motorcycle, it is possible to group the rims into three very distinct types which are:

  • The spoke motorcycle rim

This category of rims succeeds those made of wood. They are composed of multiple crossed rays forming triangles. Simple in appearance and relatively economical, the spoke wheel is the favorite of motorcycle enthusiasts. Several spokes connect the outer rim to the hub. Triangular in shape, this structure was made to be elastic and undeformable. The attributes of the spoke rim give it a quite appreciable deformation coefficient. It is particularly interesting for machines which are subjected to frontal impacts. Despite this, this type of rim cannot withstand torsion and lateral bending. Hence the need for good maintenance and regular spoke tension adjustment.

  • One-piece motorcycle rim

It is a structure cast in alloy, aluminum or magnesium. The name "monobloc" is precisely due to the fact that the rims are made up of a single piece, broken down into a few branches, unlike the spoke one. This has the advantage of bringing a real gain, both in terms of weight and rigidity. If its rigidity easily gives it the title of queen of speed, this rim does not withstand shocks.

  • Composite motorcycle rim

It is generally made from carbon, magnesium, epoxy glues, aluminum or kevlar. Overall, it brings together several types of rim design. They are based on the project of assembling various lightweight materials. The combination of all these elements makes it possible to obtain ultra light rims. It can't be beat when it comes to giving the wheel a low weight.

How to straighten a motorcycle rim?

Friction, shocks, projections, rainwater, mud and other impacts can cause serious damage to a rim. Whether it is an old or new model, the driver only needs to hit a curb or fall for the rim to twist.
To straighten a rim, it is important to respect the following steps:

Step 1: Put the motorcycle on a socket to keep it upright

Righting a wheel is essential to its forward movement. To get started put your motorcycle on a socket or stand it upright with the wheel suspended in the air. This will allow you to do the DIY more conveniently.

Step 2: Put ties on the fork

Then put two ties to the fork if the wheel to be straightened is at the front, or the swingarm if the wheel to be straightened is at the rear and cut them evenly. Use a ruler to make sure the ties are the same height and length.

Step 3: Locate the contact areas between the wheel and the tie zips

The fasteners should be positioned so that they are aligned with the rims of the motorcycle. You must then rotate the wheel by hand. This will allow you to note all the places where the rim is in contact with a zip tie.

Step 4: Use a spoke wrench to finish the job

Finally, using a specially dedicated wrench, tighten the spoke in the face and rub until the rim is centered on the zip-tie indicators. The wheel should still be rotated. You must repeat this process until the rim returns to its normal position.

The final word

Beyond its aesthetic appearance, the rim is there to support the tire and thus form the wheel. We are also trying to improve it as much as possible in terms of strength but also lightness. Thus, it is constantly exposed to external aggressions. For a better functioning, it is necessary to remember to often straighten it. There is no doubt that you will be able to do it well by respecting all these tips ...
