What to do with an electric scooter that won't start?

The electric scooter is an ecological alternative to petrol petrol scooter. The electric motor of the scooter is powered by lithium-ion batteries. This new generation of battery provides a lot of capacity for a reduced volume. On this point, the lithium-ion battery provides the best performance for all battery categories combined. However, an electric scooter has major drawbacks for the following reasons: its autonomy is not optimal for extra-urban circuits, battery charging stations are not yet dense. In any case, there are not yet any major logistics solutions to help you out when the electric scooter does not start. We will thus understand for ourselves the reasons which prevent the electric scooter from starting to prevent possible surprises.

Electric scooters - general information

Here is an article that gives you the details regarding the types and different features of electric scooters. This is intended to help you better choose your machine before purchasing.

How does the electric scooter work?

An electric scooter includes several batteries stuck together. These lithium-ion accumulators supply the electric current necessary for the electric motor, the power and efficiency of which depend on the capacities of the batteries.

Electric scooters charge quickly at public charging stations or charge slowly at home from the household outlet. To charge the electric scooter, you would need a charger equipped with a specific plug if you plan to charge at public charging stations or equipped with a standard outlet if you plan to charge it at home. A regulator called BMS or Battery management control provides optimal operation of the charging and discharging of the batteries to prevent them from deteriorating.

Let us not forget that these various components are connected by connectors and by electric wires which transmit the current and the information necessary for the proper functioning of the electric scooter.

Diagnose the charger of the electric scooter that will not start

A charger is an electrical device which sends electric current in the opposite direction to accumulators but at a higher voltage than the accumulator. There are several processes to diagnose the failure of an electric scooter charger that will not start. To check if the scooter charger is faulty or not, just look at the charge indicators.

These indicators can be bright LED, but can be displayed on the dashboard of the scooter. You just have to interpret the different colors of these indicators to be able to find the cause of the charger failure. If while charging the battery, no indicator lights up then the charger may be out of service.

In this case, replacing the charger makes sense. Otherwise, if while charging the scooter is the indicator light flashing, the charging voltage would be insufficient. In this case, check whether the mains current delivers a minimum voltage value required by the charger. Please note that a green indicator indicates a charger in good working order.

Electric scooter that won't start because of an engine problem

An electric scooter motor is made up of a movable rotor that rotates around a fixed stator. The motor is supplied by an alternating current which changes direction. This current comes from the batteries which they deliver current continuously in one direction. An inverter placed between the battery and the electric motor transforms the direct current into alternating current. Fuses (circuit breakers) and relays (switches) are integrated into the circuits to secure the flow of current which passes through the electric motor.

All these elements are interconnected by connectors and electric wires. It suffices that one of the elements of the circuit of an electric motor and which were mentioned above is out of order to prevent an electric scooter from starting. To resolve the fault in this way, it will be necessary to proceed by elimination in order to be able to diagnose the offending part. First check the fuses and electrical relays if they have not been blown.

Then, take a voltmeter calibrated to the highest value to see if current is flowing between the elements (motor, inverter, fuse, relay). Some scooters are equipped with a permanent brake which, when it is active, prevents the scooter from starting. Try to deactivate this parking brake so that you can start the scooter.

Electric scooter that won't start due to battery failure

A battery is a set of accumulators that continuously supply current to the motor. Electric scooters are equipped with lithium-ion batteries that perform very well compared to their tiny size. This type of battery has no equal on the market at the moment. First of all, a battery cannot be charged indefinitely. Its maximum charge cycle determines its lifespan. If you think that the autonomy provided by the batteries tended to decrease then it is high time to replace them, because they would have reached their life cycle

And, finally, check if the Battery Management System or BMS is correctly performing its role of charge, discharge and storage regulator.
