When to overhaul a 50cc scooter?

A 50cc scooter is a symbol of freedom for many people. Indeed, it is for many 14 year olds who have just had BSR, a way to finally have a little autonomy.

So, inevitably, when you are young, you think above all about the advantages of having a scooter and it is easy to forget that it is still a machine that will need a minimum of maintenance to operate.

Indeed, we told you for example in a previous article about the method to follow to change a piston for example. But beyond these temporary changes of certain parts, there is one thing not to miss.

This thing is of course the revision of a 50cc scooter and we will guide you to succeed step by step in this article. You will be given advice on the frequency of this maintenance.

We will also tell you more precisely what checks to do to do a complete overhaul from home. Finally, we will tell you how to master one of the key elements of this review of a 50cc scooter, namely the oil change!

Refer to the maintenance booklet for your machine

To know when to overhaul a 50cc scooter, it is better to rely on what the manufacturer of your machine will recommend. In general, we are on something fairly standard.

Namely a service every 2500 km with a big service every 5000 km. However, your machine's maintenance manual is the most comprehensive item you will ever have on hand.

Indeed, it will not only tell you the dates of the revisions, but also what to do and the parts to change at the same time. It is simply a gold mine for you.

So, if you no longer have this maintenance booklet, what we will advise you to do is go to your computer with the make, model and year of your scooter and enter all this on a search engine.

Then go in search of the maintenance book of the machine and print the pages which tell you all the steps to follow so that you no longer have to ask yourself questions about the revision of a 50cc scooter in the future.

What is the revision of a 50cc scooter?

But if ever you haven't been able to find it, we will tell you what to do when servicing a 50cc scooter. Let's start with checking your tires.

These must not have any defects and must be at the correct pressure. For this, use a manometer and refer to the data indicated near your wheel. Once that's done, take a look at your brakes.

Disassemble the pads and watch that there is still at least 1mm of packing left, otherwise you are good to change them. Then check the air filter in order to see if it is in good condition or if it needs to be changed.

Finally, the last step will be that of emptying. To help you do it quickly and easily, we have also devoted the last part of our article on the review of a 500cc scooter to it.

The material for the revision of a 50cc scooter

Regarding the material to overhaul a 50cc scooter, there will not be that much in fact. Indeed, we will start with the classics namely a set of keys to disassemble anything you want.

From there, unless you have a part to change, you don't especially need any additional hardware. In fact, it is for the emptying that you are going to need a little more material.

So, provide a container of oil, a funnel to be able to pour the old oil back into the can and thus evacuate it more easily in a recycling center. Also provide a basin to be able to collect the old used oil at first.

How to do an oil change?

It is time to take an interest in the key stage of this revision of a 50cc scooter, namely the oil change. To do this, first place the basin we have just mentioned below the oil pan.

Check that the motorcycle is in a flat place and unscrew the screw of this famous oil pan. You should then see the old oil leaking out and you have done the hard work by then.

You can run your hand through the oil to check that it does not contain too much scrap. If so, it is a sign that the engine has worn out and you should therefore be concerned about this phenomenon.

Once you have drained all the oil, you can screw the crankcase screw back in and fill with new oil. You must then ensure that the quantity of oil is between the minimum and the maximum.

To do a revision, you must therefore:

  • Check tire pressure
  • Check the brake calipers
  • Make an oil change
  • Check the maintenance book for any parts to be changed
