When to overhaul a 125cc scooter?

A scooter is very practical to be able to move around, especially in environments like the city where traffic jams are common and where this vehicle reveals great potential.

But like any vehicle, the scooter also needs a minimum of maintenance and if you don't want to run into problems, you are going to have to do these operations when it is necessary to do them.

In a previous article, we explained to you, for example, how to know when to change tires and especially how you should go about it. Here, we will continue to give you maintenance advice.

Except this time, we tackle the big check up of his machine. Indeed, we are going to talk here about the revision of a 125cc scooter. Together, we will see when to do it, but also how to achieve certain key steps.

When to overhaul a 125cc scooter?

The first question to ask yourself is when to overhaul a 125cc scooter. For this, there is no universal answer. The only thing you need to know is that there are two ways to find out.

If you want a precise answer that comes directly from the manufacturer of your machine, we advise you to consult the maintenance manual where everything will normally be indicated.

However, it can happen that it is lost. You will then go several solutions as to the revision of a 125cc scooter. The first is to simply search for it online with the make and model of your machine.

If it is not too old, then you should not struggle too much to find your happiness including the maintenance book which will tell you when your next revision of a 125cc scooter is done.

Otherwise, you can rely on general figures which tell you that in general, we do a short trip around 2 km and that we will do a major service every 500 km or so.

Day-to-day maintenance

While overhauling a 125cc scooter is important, you shouldn't neglect the day-to-day maintenance either. It would be wrong to believe that having an overhaul every 2500 km is a guarantee.

Indeed, if you do not pay attention to certain elements that you will also look at during the oil change, you may one day have unpleasant surprises. Therefore, do not hesitate to regularly check the oil level.

If ever it is missing, fill it up to make sure that your engine is well lubricated and that the metal parts do not rub against each other which can cause serious damage to your machine.

Likewise, remember to check the tire pressure to avoid underinflation which could lead to serious damage when driving with premature wear of your tires.

Finally, what we will advise in general is to wait 5 minutes after starting your scooter before using it. Thus, all the engine parts will have time to heat up.

What to do in the overhaul of a 125cc scooter?

Okay, now let's tackle the bulk of the subject by seeing what to check when we want to overhaul a 125cc scooter. Well, the first thing that comes to mind is draining.

An act that you must master and that we will detail in the last part of this article. Then, you have to check that the tire pressure is correct using a pressure gauge, relying on the manufacturer's data.

You can also remove the brake calipers to see if there is at least 1mm of lining left. Otherwise you can change the pads. Finally you can clean the air filter and check that the spark plug is in good condition.

Drain

Changing the oil is one of the key stages in the overhaul of a 125cc scooter. A fairly easy step to do as long as you know how to go about it and which will save you a few euros.

The first thing for you to do will be to put a basin under the oil pan to ensure that it does not escape into nature. Then unscrew the screw of this crankcase and you will see the oil leaving.

Wait a few minutes for all this oil to drain off (make sure your scooter is on level ground) and replace the screw. all you have to do then is to top up with new oil.

For this, rely on two things. The first is the capacity of your oil tank and therefore the recommended quantity. Then check that you are between the mini and the maxi, not above or below.

To do a revision, you must therefore:

  • Check tire pressure
  • Check the brake calipers
  • Make an oil change
  • Check the maintenance book for any parts to be changed
