When to change a scooter crankshaft?

Scooters, like all vehicles, are a compendium of technology and have many parts. The problem is, if one of these parts were to stop functioning, it could create a chain reaction.

A reaction that would lead to a breakdown and therefore to the immobilization of your scooter, which you surely do not want. You are therefore surely asking yourself questions about these famous so-called wear parts.

Indeed, it is important to know when to change them in order to face the problems and therefore prevent them from giving up before you have made this famous change. Well, in our articles we answer these questions!

We have for example did an article on changing segments some time ago that went back over all the stages. Today is another piece that will interest us.

In this article, you will find everything you need to know about how to change a scooter crankshaft. We will come back to the frequency of this change, how to do it, but also to the role of this famous crankshaft.

What is a crankshaft?

Before we get into how to change a scooter crankshaft, it is important to understand how important this part is in the operation of your engine and for that let's start from the base.

The candle ignites a mixture of gasoline and air, which will create an explosion. This explosion will then set in motion a part that everyone knows well, namely the piston.

Except that the piston, it makes a movement which is linear and rectilinear, which is wrong. We then need a part that will transform this movement into a rotational movement for fairly obvious reasons.

Well, it's the crankshaft that will have this role. In fact, it is more complicated and it is made up of other important parts such as the connecting rods which we have surely heard you talk about, but we will not go into more details.

All you need to know is what general role it has and so you will understand that if you ever have a crankshaft that just broke you are going to have a serious problem with your scooter.

When to change a scooter crankshaft?

We now know how it works, but that doesn't tell us when to change a scooter crankshaft. Well the answer is that a lot of times you don't need to change it.

Such an important part is made to last and we will not be able to give you precise data. However, like any part, it happens that this one suffers damage and that at that moment the change is necessary.

What we will therefore advise you is to check the general condition of this part when you are going to change another part of your scooter engine, such as the piston for example.

Thus, the engine will already be partly dismantled, and you can take the opportunity to take a look at the general condition. If you ever see it's damaged, don't think twice and change a scooter crankshaft.

However, as we said a few lines above, it is quite normal that you do not change this part often. So don't panic if you see that this crankshaft is still there in good condition.

The necessary equipment

Like any operation on the engine of your machine, changing a scooter crankshaft still requires basic mechanics knowing that you will have to disassemble the engine.

Therefore, what we will advise you if you are not used to doing this kind of manipulation, is simply not to do it, because you risk doing more harm than good!

Then see your dealer who can help you with this change. But if you want to do it on your own, you're going to need a set of keys as well as pipe wrenches for disassembly.

You are going to need more a clutch key to specifically disassemble the clutch housing. Finally, plan a clean cloth to be able to put the different parts that you are going to dismantle.

How to change a scooter crankshaft?

To change a scooter crankshaft, the first step is going to be to have access to the engine. Once this is done, it is necessary to start by disassembling the clutch housing with the key. You will be able to take out the torque control and the clutch.

Then, it is the variator that you will have to dismantle which will give you access to the starter which you in turn demonstrate. It will then be the turn of the ignition and its oil seal to be removed.

You will then have access to the engine crankcase, the two sides of which will have to be removed. Then you can finally see the crankshaft. Start by removing the bearings from it first.

Then you will have done most of the work. You will be able to clean the crankcase and the parts with a little mineral spirits while you are at it and all you have to do is fit the new crankshaft.

To change a crankshaft, you must:

  • Disassemble the parts to access the engine
  • Remove the clutch housing
  • Remove the drive then the starter
  • Remove both sides of the engine casing
  • Change the crankshaft

Know everything about scooters and their worries

Scooters are means of locomotion appreciated by many people around the world, among other things for their ability to sneak around.

But there are several types of scooters in fact depending on the uses you are going to use. This is why we come back with you on these different types in a dedicated article.
