What to do with a motorcycle that starts badly when hot?

Nowadays, the motorcycle has become an excellent ally for all trips : whether to go to work, to go shopping or to go to a party. It is convenient for driving in town through traffic jams, on highways or in the countryside. In addition, it does not take up much space in the garage and is much easier to park wherever you go.

It's a convenient form of transportation that saves you long waits in traffic jams. We can therefore always count on it to arrive on time at its destination. However, it may happen that one day, due to a malfunction, it has difficulty starting hot. This is not an isolated case and there is nothing to be alarmed about. Here are five points to guide you to solve the problem of your motorcycle that starts badly when hot.

The 5 reasons that your motorcycle starts badly when hot

No one is safe from a vehicle breakdown, whether on the way or at the start. There are several factors that can cause hot start difficulties. Here are 5 reasons that can be behind this.

1. The spark plugs have reached the specified service life.

For motorcycles, spark plugs are used to generate an electric spark inside a combustion chamber to ignite the air-fuel mixture. However, these spark plugs have an expiration date and wear and tear can cause problems when starting. Hot candles have a hard time dissipating heat, so it is best to replace them with cold candles.

2. A problem with the starter

The starter of a motorcycle is a device that allows the activation of the engine. It can happen that the starter relay gets stuck. Either it is seized and you just need to release it before reassembling it, or it is the start button which is seized and lets the current supplying the relay pass without stopping. It is then necessary to clean the connectors which are inside this button. It is also possible that the starter is completely out of service. In this case you must absolutely replace it.

3. The air filter is worn.

The air filter which is made from fabric and fiber serves to filter particles and impurities to purify the air which will mix with the fuel. However, this filter can easily wear out due to said impurities. In the long run, it risks being clogged and completely unusable. In this case you are required to replace it.

4. Defective battery

The battery of a motorcycle is used to power the starter for cranking the engine. An improperly charged or defective battery can therefore cause difficulties during a hot start. It is therefore necessary to check that the battery is charging well. If this is the cause of the failure, it must be replaced. However, you must make sure that the new battery is of good quality and corresponds to your model so as not to encounter the same problem again.

5. Engine overheating

When your motorcycle is driven for a certain number of kilometers, it is normal for it to heat up. However, an excessive temperature can be a sign of an internal malfunction and can be the main cause of a failure, including the hot start problem. Your motorcycle may be the victim of a vapor lock, i.e. gasoline evaporates in the fuel system. The easiest solution is to wait for the engine to cool before trying to start the motorcycle again.

Some tips to overcome the difficulties of hot starting your motorcycle

Several problems that you do not necessarily encounter during a cold start can arise when starting hot. It can happen that we try to restart our bike several times but in the end nothing helps. You can easily prevent these malfunctions so that you don't waste time for nothing.

To avoid a vapor lock, you should regularly check your gas pump. Make sure that the pressure emitted is not too low. Do not drive with an almost empty fuel tank. The fuel must reach more than half the capacity of the tank.

Usually during a warm start, the problem is with the battery. Make sure that the latter is not out of date and that the electrical connections of your motorcycle are properly in place. Do not hesitate to replace it if you see that it is defective.

It is also necessary to adjust the level of the tank, the synchronization of the carburettors, the adjustment of the richness screw as well as the carburetion by checking the needle and the venting of the tank.
